Honorary Stateswoman

  Albert Edelfelt, drawing, c. 1890s.
Aurora Karamzin.

In later life Aurora Karamzin was still active and in good health; only her hearing was impaired. In spite of this she continued to invite guests to the Hakasalmi Villa. Aurora Karamzin's ninetieth birthday was on August 1, 1898. The birthday party was held on August 3, and a number of guests and delegations, including people from the imperial court, arrived at the Hakasalmi Villa to pay their respects. In recognition of her work and loyalty to her country,

Aurora was handed a civic address, the cover of which was designed by Louis Sparre and Albert Edelfelt.
The most valuable honour came from Tsar Nikolai II, who conferred the title of Honorary Stateswoman on Aurora Karamzin. The title was the second highest in rank among the women of the imperial court and required its holder to be addressed as "Her Excellency".
