One of the better known buildings in Kaivopuisto park is to be found high up on the rocky peak: the Ursa observatory. It was designed by the architect Martti Välikangas in 1926. Beside the former spa is the Ursula cafeteria, which has occupied the site since the 1950's. At the southernmost point on the Kaivopuisto shoreline there is a small building from 1904. oldest mareograph, a gauge for recording the sea level and salinity of the water.
The park also serves as a venue for popular events. Students celebrate May Day there and concerts are regularly held in the summers, although there has been some concern about the wear and tear on this 160-year-old piece of national heritage. |
