Helsinki City Museum has an extensive art collection, made up of approximately 6,000 sketches, watercolours and paintings. The collection is based on the private collection bequeathed by Lieutenant-General Otto W. Furuhjelm (1819-1883) for a local museum at some future date, i.e. the present-day Helsinki City Museum. More recently, the principle for acquisitions has been documentary in character, suggesting a way of preserving a changing cityscape. Both the exhibition and the web pages document the changes that have taken place in the cityscape.
The site is divided into city districts. In addition to these the site presents in more detail the artist Magnus von Wright. The pages are partly based on the Helsinki in Frames exhibition texts, and offer more detailed information about the history of the various districts. The artwork and photographs used to illustrate the pages are from the City Museum's own collection. Please note that copying and recording by any technical means whatsoever is a breach of copyright.
We hope you enjoy Helsinki through its artworks.
