The Sugar girl

Viljo Savikurki, sculpture, 1956.
The Sugar girl.

At Mannerheiminitie street no. 15, in the vicinity of the opera house, and sheltered under old linden and maple trees, is Viljo Savikurki's statue of the Sugar Girl. It represents a small girl giving a sugar lump to her Finnish spitz dog. Suomen Sokeri Oy, the Finnish Sugar Company,

commissioned the statue in 1956 in honour of the industry's bicentenary for what was then the front yard of the company headquarters. The Sugar Girl and a fragment of the brick wall of the former headquarters are all that remain of the sugar industry's activities here.
