According to
old customs celebrations started with dinner
at the bride's home. After the end of the meal
a wedding procession was given for the
bridegroom and the bride, their relatives and
guests. Carriages and saddled horses would be
drawn up in front of the main entrance. Even
the poorest citizens did not walk to the
altar. The bride supported by match- making
women took her seat in the festively decorated
cabriolet whose arches were adorned with
foxtails and wolftails.
The bridegroom
together with his friends and the priest rode
in the front of the wedding procession. The
bride with her match-making women and all the
other wedding guests rode behind them. During
the marriage ceremony an elder, the most
important official at |

front of the church door. He kept watch that
nobody crossed over between the bridegroom's
horse and the cabriolet of the bride. After
the wedding ceremony the wedding procession
made its way to the bridegroom's house where
the feast continued. |
