The southern part of Kalasatama has been vacated from port use in November 2008. The planning of the area is in progress, and the first new area south of Kulosaari bridge, Sörnäistenniemi, is ready-planned. The area will be canalized into parts that symbolize the islands that formerly were there. Hanasaari power plant will remain on the spot for a long time still, and three big coal bins will be built nearby. |

An architectural competition on the area was organised in 2007. The winner was ALA Oy architects’ office. The proposal presented five big terraced blocks with the maximum height of 18 storeys. The blocks form an entity brilliantly adapted to the site which will give Hanasaari a strong new identity. |
